He climbed up the rope ladder and felt the solid deck of
Carpathia under his feet. The deck was crowded with
people. A woman handed him a blanket. Someone else
offered him a cup of hot soup.
Jack looked around. Where were his parents?
“Jack!”
He looked up and ran to his mother.
“They said this was the last boat to come in. I was
beginning to give up hope.” She looked around desperately.
“Where’s your father?”
Jacks’ heart sank. He shook his head. Then he and his
mother fell into each other’s arms and cried.
Jack Thayer went to university and had a successful career in
banking. He eventually married and had children. Throughout
his life, Jack insisted that he had seen the Titanic break in two
on the night of the sinking. He was proved right in 1985.
